Aqara Thermostat Hub W200 Review: One Screen to Run the Whole Smart Home?

A brilliant-looking thermostat, a serious Matter hub and a very awkward fit for British central heating.

The Aqara Thermostat Hub W200 is one of those products that makes you sit up a little. On paper, it is wonderfully overqualified for the job: a touchscreen thermostat, temperature and humidity sensor, mmWave presence detector, Aqara Zigbee hub, Matter controller and Thread Border Router all living in one neat square on the wall. That is a lot more interesting than another plastic dial with delusions of grandeur. For UK buyers, though, there is one enormous snag. The current W200 is a North American 24VAC HVAC thermostat, not a British boiler controller.

Let's get the headline out of the way before the clever bits distract us: the Aqara Thermostat Hub W200 cannot be recommended as a straightforward Nest or Hive replacement in a typical UK home. It was built around North American 24VAC heating and cooling systems, complete with terminals for furnaces, air conditioning, heat pumps, PTAC systems and the sort of wiring diagram that makes perfect sense in Minnesota but decidedly less sense beside a British combi boiler.

That matters because thermostats are not like smart bulbs. You cannot simply pick the prettiest app, swap a couple of wires and hope for the best. UK heating controls commonly involve a 230V supply, a boiler relay, a programmer or wiring centre, and sometimes a separate hot-water channel. The W200 does not bring a supported UK relay arrangement, dedicated UK-style hot-water control or a confirmed path into a domestic TRV ecosystem. That is not a minor footnote. It is the review.

As a North American smart thermostat, the W200 is unusually ambitious. As a thermostat for a British boiler, it is a non-starter in its current form. The smart-home hub is the tempting bit; the electrical compatibility is the bit that stops the conversation.

Still, it is worth looking closely at what Aqara has made here, because the concept is genuinely strong. The front is a 4-inch, 480 × 480 full-colour touchscreen. Behind it are temperature and humidity sensors, plus mmWave radar that Aqara rates at up to 3 metres with a 120-degree field of view. The device can wake when you approach, react to presence in automations and present more than just a target temperature. Aqara has also positioned it as a miniature wall control panel for doorbell snapshots and smart locks.

Then there is the hub side. Unlike Nest and Hive, which are primarily heating products with ecosystem connections, the W200 aims to be a proper smart-home bridge. It supports Aqara Zigbee devices, Matter 1.4 control and Thread Border Router duties, alongside dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. If you are building an Aqara-heavy home in the US or Canada, that is an elegant bit of consolidation. One powered device can sit in a central location, control the HVAC system and take on jobs that might otherwise require a separate hub.

The W200 launched in North America in April 2026 after its CES unveiling in January 2026. On 20 August 2026, the standard SRT-A06E was sold through Aqara's US store for $159.99. There was no UK launch for the current model.

So this review has two jobs. First, to see whether the W200 really could run a smart home from one screen. Second, and more importantly for anyone reading this in Britain, to work out whether that cleverness survives contact with a UK boiler cupboard. Spoiler: no amount of Matter support can turn 24VAC terminals into a supported 230V heating installation.

Two W200s, One Heating Platform

Aqara listed two versions of the W200: the standard Thermostat Hub W200 SRT-A06E and the Thermostat Hub W200 Matte Kit SRT-A06D. The useful thing to know is that this is not a conventional "good, better, best" range. There is no evidence that one has stronger HVAC outputs, a better sensor package, different wireless hardware or more advanced smart-home software.

The distinction is principally finish and kit positioning. The SRT-A06E is the standard version with the full published technical specification. The SRT-A06D is the Matte Kit. If you had hoped the matte model quietly solved the UK compatibility issue, I am afraid the answer is less exciting than that. It did not establish a separate British heating pathway.

Those are decent thermostat numbers. The 100mm square footprint is broadly in the same visual territory as a premium wall control rather than a tiny battery thermostat, and the 25mm depth keeps it from becoming a proud little brick on the wall. The display resolution is especially welcome. A thermostat does not need cinema-grade pixels, obviously, but 480 × 480 gives Aqara enough room for legible climate controls, device shortcuts and snapshots without every menu feeling like it was designed on a postage stamp.

Climate sensing built in

The W200 measures temperature and humidity locally, with quoted accuracy of ±0.5°C and ±1% respectively. That gives it a solid basic foundation before any extra Aqara sensors enter the picture.

Presence, not just movement

Its mmWave radar is designed to see a person who is sitting relatively still, rather than relying on a simple motion sensor that may decide you have vanished halfway through a film.

A proper interface

The display is intended to show heating controls, Aqara doorbell snapshots and smart-lock controls, giving it a broader role than a conventional thermostat screen.

Hub hardware included

The thermostat doubles as an Aqara Zigbee hub, Matter controller and Thread Border Router. It is not merely a thermostat that happens to have an app.

The W200's square format is designed to work as both a climate controller and a compact wall-mounted Aqara dashboard.

The W200 needs fixed 24VAC wiring and has no battery to charge or replace. That makes sense for a wall thermostat, but it also means its installation requirements are inseparable from the heating system it is expected to control.

The UK Wiring Problem You Cannot App-Away

This is the section to read before you fall in love with the screen. The W200 takes 24VAC input, with Aqara specifying 18–30VA. Its HVAC outputs are rated to a maximum of 2.5A total and 1.0A on a single output. Its terminal layout is also very clearly North American: Rc, Rh, Y1/Y2, G, C, W1/W2, O/B and SSW appear depending on the heating or cooling system.

That alphabet soup is normal for conventional US heating and cooling. Rc and Rh relate to power, Y generally covers cooling stages, G is fan control, W heating stages, O/B is commonly associated with heat-pump reversing valves, and C is the common wire that keeps the thermostat powered. Aqara requires a C-wire for standard installation, and sells a separate C-wire adapter for systems that do not have one.

None of that maps cleanly onto the way most British homes are controlled. A common UK installation has a mains-powered boiler control circuit, frequently a wall thermostat or wireless receiver that switches a boiler demand relay. Homes with stored hot water may have separate heating and hot-water channels. Others use a wiring centre and zone valves. Some newer boilers can use OpenTherm modulation. The point is not that every British home is identical; it is that the W200 was not designed around any of those scenarios.

Do not treat this as an adapter problem

A 24VAC HVAC thermostat and a 230V UK boiler-control circuit are different electrical systems. The absence of a supported British installation path is not something to solve with a random relay module, a wiring diagram from a forum or a hopeful afternoon with a screwdriver. Heating controls are safety-critical equipment.

It is tempting to say, "But Aqara lists boilers." It does. In the W200's intended market, that refers to compatible North American 24VAC boiler and HVAC installations. It does not mean a British gas boiler is supported simply because both systems happen to heat water. The surrounding wiring, relays, voltage and control conventions matter as much as the heat source itself.

This is where Nest and Hive earn their keep in the UK. Their job is not only to look smart in the hallway; they are sold as British heating-control systems with an appropriate receiver or Heat Link arrangement. Nest's UK third-generation Learning Thermostat has a separate Heat Link with two relays rated at 3(1)A at 230V AC, and supports heating and hot water as well as OpenTherm. Hive's receiver is likewise a mains-powered part of a UK heating-control installation. They may not have Aqara's multi-protocol hub credentials, but they speak the language of the boiler cupboard.

Drayton Wiser and tado° X take the same practical route. They begin with the heating system, then add the smart-home layer. Wiser Thermostat Kit 1 includes a 230V HubR with relay and OpenTherm connections. tado° X was built around UK boiler control, including relay/on-off and OpenTherm options, with the wireless starter kit intended for the sort of domestic installation the W200 simply does not target.

What the W200 does well electrically

  • It supports a broad range of North American 24VAC HVAC arrangements, including furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, boilers and PTAC systems.
  • The 24VAC design allows continuous power for the large touchscreen and integrated hub functions.
  • Its C-wire requirement is clear, with a separate adapter available for suitable North American systems.

Why it does not fit Britain

  • It does not provide a supported UK 230V boiler relay installation.
  • There is no established UK hot-water control arrangement for the current product.
  • Its North American terminals and HVAC examples do not replace a British programmer, wiring centre or Heat Link.

There is another, more mundane reason not to try to force it. When something goes wrong with heating controls, you want a system that an installer can understand, support and replace. You do not want to be explaining that the thermostat came from the US and is also, technically, a Thread Border Router. That conversation is unlikely to improve anyone's afternoon.

The W200 uses North American 24VAC HVAC terminals, which are fundamentally different from the supported boiler-control arrangements found in most UK homes.

TRVs, Zones and Hot Water: Where the UK Use Case Falls Apart

Even if the wiring issue did not exist, a thermostat alone is only one piece of a modern UK heating setup. Plenty of British homes have several radiators, different room temperatures, awkward bedrooms that run cold, sunny living rooms that overheat and, often, a hot-water cylinder that needs its own schedule. A good system needs to deal with the whole messy reality rather than merely displaying a handsome number in the hallway.

The W200 has no confirmed native UK TRV system and no W200-specific radiator-valve control pathway. Aqara's wider catalogue includes radiator-related products in some markets, but that is not the same thing as offering a verified UK boiler-and-TRV package around this thermostat. If you are trying to build a living-room zone, bedroom zone and office zone with smart radiator valves, the W200 is not a like-for-like alternative to tado° X or Drayton Wiser.

That distinction is easy to miss because the W200's sensor story sounds so strong. It can use its own temperature, humidity and presence data, and Aqara has promoted support for remote sensors such as the W100 climate sensor. Remote sensing is useful. A thermostat located by the front door is rarely measuring the temperature where you spend your evening. But remote temperature data is not automatically room-by-room heating control. You also need compatible valve control, sensible boiler demand logic and scheduling that understands which rooms are actually asking for heat.

One thermostat is one viewpoint

The W200 can improve the accuracy of its decisions with remote Aqara sensors, but it remains a central thermostat rather than a complete British radiator-zone system.

Scheduling needs a whole system

Schedules are only useful if the thermostat can command the boiler and any room valves safely. This is precisely where UK-specific ecosystems earn their reputation.

Hot water is separate business

Homes with a hot-water cylinder commonly need independent control. The W200 does not establish dedicated UK-style heating-and-hot-water operation.

Zones bring extra hardware

Valves, receivers, wiring centres and boilers all need to agree. A touchscreen does not remove any of that plumbing and control logic.

Think ecosystem first, screen second

For UK heating, start with your boiler type, whether you have a hot-water tank, your existing control wiring and whether you want radiator-by-radiator control. Once those answers are clear, choose the thermostat platform. Buying the screen first is how you end up with a very attractive square that cannot turn the heating on.

tado° X is the most obvious contrast. Its Wireless Smart Thermostat X Starter Kit launched at £159.99 and supports relay/on-off and OpenTherm heating, UK hot-water control, and Smart Radiator Thermostat X valves for room-by-room management. Its wireless kit also has a built-in Thread Border Router and Matter over Thread support. It does not offer the W200's large touchscreen or built-in Zigbee hub, but it is much closer to the thing many British households are actually shopping for.

Drayton Wiser is a less glamorous but very practical alternative. The one-channel Thermostat Kit 1 is intended for combi boilers and most modern boiler systems, offers relay and OpenTherm connections, includes the Wiser HubR and works with Wiser Smart Radiator Thermostats. It supports up to 16 rooms and 63 Wiser devices. That is the difference between smart-home possibility and heating-system capability.

Hive sits somewhere between a conventional smart thermostat and a broader UK control platform. It remains a familiar option for gas, LPG and many oil boiler systems, with heating and hot-water boost functions and the option of multizone control using separate thermostats and receivers. It does not have the W200's Matter and Thread proposition, and it is not the natural choice for radiator-by-radiator control, but it gets the core British heating job right.

One Screen, Four Radio Systems and a Lot of Ambition

Put the heating mismatch to one side for a moment and the W200 becomes much more compelling. Aqara has packed an unusual amount of connectivity into this device. It has dual-band Wi-Fi covering 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks with 802.11a/b/g/n/ac support, Bluetooth, an Aqara Zigbee hub, Matter 1.4 controller functionality and Thread Border Router capability. That is a seriously capable radio stack for a wall thermostat.

The important bit is how those roles fit together. Zigbee lets the W200 connect Aqara Zigbee accessories, potentially removing the need for a separate Aqara hub in a compatible setup. Thread Border Router functionality lets it help bring Thread devices onto your home network. Matter control makes it easier to integrate compatible devices across ecosystems. Aqara advertises direct integration with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings and Home Assistant.

This is where the W200 makes Nest and Hive look slightly old-fashioned. Nest is an excellent thermostat in the right installation, and Hive remains useful for people embedded in Hive's own family of devices, but neither is trying to be a Matter controller, Thread Border Router and Zigbee hub all at once. Aqara is clearly trying to turn the thermostat into a fixed smart-home anchor point rather than merely an endpoint.

Early hands-on reports were encouraging here. Matter setup with Apple Home and Home Assistant was described as straightforward, and reviewers generally found core operation responsive. That is the right kind of praise for a hub. The boring stuff should be boring: pairing should work, automations should respond and the thermostat should not need a dramatic little reboot ceremony every Thursday evening.

The W200's strongest argument

If you already use Aqara Zigbee sensors, locks, buttons or security devices, the W200's hub role may be more valuable than its thermostat role. It can consolidate hardware while putting useful controls and doorbell snapshots on a screen that lives where people actually walk past it.

There are limits. The W200 does not have an Ethernet port, so it relies on Wi-Fi for its network connection. For a device intended to underpin automations, that makes sensible router placement and a stable wireless network more important. It is also not a magical universal hub for every legacy smart-home product. Matter improves interoperability, but ecosystems still matter, and Aqara's Zigbee hub function is aimed at Aqara Zigbee devices.

There is also a simple value question. If all you want is a schedule that turns the heating on before breakfast, the W200 is hilariously over-equipped. A Matter controller and Thread Border Router are not much comfort if you have no Matter or Thread devices. Conversely, if your home is already becoming a small but determined collection of sensors, lights, locks and buttons, putting that intelligence into a central wall device is genuinely tidy.

Beyond heating, the W200 can act as an Aqara Zigbee hub, Matter controller and Thread Border Router from a single powered wall location.

Daily Use: Touchscreen Thermostat or Smart-Home Control Panel?

The W200's 4-inch touchscreen is the reason it feels different. A lot of smart thermostats have screens, of course, but many use them as a glorified temperature read-out with a tiny menu buried behind a dial. Aqara is aiming higher. At 480 × 480 pixels, the display has enough resolution to carry weather-like information, climate settings and smart-home controls without looking cramped.

In everyday terms, that should make the W200 more approachable for people who do not want to fish out a phone every time they adjust the house temperature. You walk past it, the mmWave sensor notices, the screen wakes and the climate controls are there. Early reviewers specifically liked this wake-up behaviour, and it is exactly the sort of modest quality-of-life touch that makes a wall device feel alive rather than merely powered.

The radar is rated for up to 3 metres and a 120-degree field of view. That is useful coverage for a hallway, living room entrance or central open-plan area, but it is not whole-home occupancy sensing. Placement remains important. Put it in a quiet corridor and it can react to people passing. Put it somewhere where a door blocks its view or where you rarely walk near it, and its presence feature has less to work with. A single sensor can be clever without being clairvoyant.

Immediate local control

The W200 is built around changing climate settings at the wall, not treating the screen as a secondary afterthought behind the mobile app.

The mmWave sensor can trigger broader Aqara automations. This could wake lighting, alter a scene or simply bring the screen to life when someone approaches.

Doorbell snapshots

Aqara doorbell snapshots can appear on the display, turning the thermostat into a more useful household screen than a climate product alone.

Lock controls

Aqara smart-lock controls can be accessed from the touchscreen, which makes most sense in a well-placed entrance hall or main living space.

There is a slight tension in this design. Thermostats are generally placed where the heating wiring already exists, which is not always where you would choose to put a smart-home display. A boiler control location might be beside the front door, in a draughty hall or tucked away where nobody would ever use doorbell controls. That is a familiar thermostat problem, but the W200 makes it more visible because it offers more reasons to interact with the screen.

Installation hardware is sensibly comprehensive for its intended market. The box includes the thermostat, base plate, trim plate, wire labels and guide, manual, screws and drywall plugs. The trim plate is particularly useful for replacing an older thermostat and hiding a larger patch of wall. Aqara's wiring labels should also help with an orderly swap where the existing HVAC system is suitable. Nobody has ever looked at a thermostat install and thought, "I wish there were fewer labels."

Early user trials reported installation in under ten minutes in one case and under five minutes in another. Those are individual reports rather than controlled benchmarks, and they apply to compatible 24VAC installations. Electrical commissioning is a separate matter from attaching the device to the wall.

Aqara's remote-sensor ambitions are good, although early feedback pointed to an area where the software still had room to mature. Users wanted more flexible multi-sensor averaging and clearer choices around which temperature sensor should govern control. That is not unusual for a young thermostat platform. It is also worth noting that heating systems can be surprisingly sensitive to this detail. A thermostat that follows the temperature in the wrong corner of the house can be technically accurate and practically annoying.

The W200 is rated for operating temperatures from −10°C to 50°C and humidity from 0% to 95% relative humidity, non-condensing. Those are broad indoor operating limits. It is not an outdoor controller, and this is not a device to mount in a steamy bathroom simply because the screen looks nice beside the towels.

The supplied trim plate, base plate, wire labels and fixings are designed to make a replacement installation tidy on a compatible 24VAC system.

What Does $159.99 Buy — and What Would a UK Buyer Actually Need?

The standard Aqara Thermostat Hub W200 SRT-A06E was listed at $159.99 in the United States on 20 August 2026. In North American thermostat terms, that is a competitive price for something with a 4-inch touchscreen, mmWave presence sensing, Zigbee hub functionality, Matter control and a Thread Border Router built in. Buy all of those jobs separately and the total can become rather less cheerful.

That price is not a value argument for UK buyers, though. It is the starting price of a product that does not have a confirmed UK retail launch or supported British heating route. Importing it would not turn the price into a bargain once you factor in the need for a safe, appropriate control solution. More importantly, it would not make the product suitable for the job.

The Matte Kit SRT-A06D was listed as a second W200 version, positioned around its matte finish. MacSources reported Apple Store availability from September 2026 at $169.99. That report did not change the core buying calculation for Britain: the W200 platform remained a North American 24VAC thermostat rather than a British boiler controller.

For a US buyer with a compatible system, the package is easy to understand. The W200 can replace a thermostat and perhaps an Aqara hub, while also extending Thread and Matter coverage. For a UK buyer, the shopping list starts somewhere else: a supported boiler controller, possibly a receiver, perhaps smart TRVs for room control, and potentially a hot-water channel. The W200 does not eliminate those needs.

Good value in its home market

  • $159.99 buys far more than basic temperature scheduling.
  • Its hub functions can reduce duplicate Aqara and Thread hardware in a compatible home.
  • The large screen and mmWave sensor add visible day-to-day value rather than hiding every feature in an app.

Poor value for a UK heating upgrade

  • No UK installation path means the headline price is largely irrelevant to British buyers.
  • It does not replace a UK boiler relay or established hot-water controller.
  • It lacks a confirmed native route to UK-style smart radiator-valve zoning.

If your goal is simply to heat a British house more intelligently, the sensible money goes on the platform that can directly control your boiler and rooms. The clever screen can wait. It may not be as fun to buy, but neither is replacing a heating control system because the first purchase was based on vibes.

It would be easy to declare the W200 "better" than Nest or Hive because it has more radios, a larger display and mmWave sensing. That would also be wrong. Heating products are not judged like smartphones, where more spec-sheet boxes often mean more capability. They are judged by whether they control the particular heating system in your home reliably, safely and in the way your household actually needs.

The W200 is more ambitious as a smart-home hub than either Nest or Hive. Nest's UK third-generation Learning Thermostat has a 2-inch, 480 × 480 colour display, a rechargeable battery and sensors for temperature, humidity, proximity, occupancy, ambient light and ring position. It supports UK boilers, hot water and OpenTherm through its Heat Link. Hive uses a smaller thermostat-and-receiver approach with Zigbee communications, and its current thermostat listing covered heating and hot-water functions such as scheduling, boosts, frost protection and holiday mode.

Neither puts Aqara's combination of Matter 1.4 controller, Thread Border Router, Aqara Zigbee hub and mmWave radar on your wall. But neither asks you to import a 24VAC thermostat into a country where domestic heating controls work very differently. The W200 therefore is not really a direct upgrade, downgrade or sideways move for UK buyers. It is a different product from a different heating market that happens to look appealingly futuristic.

The W200 is richer as a smart-home hub than a conventional UK thermostat, but Nest, Hive, tado° X and Wiser begin with compatible boiler control.

For a British home, compatibility is the first filter. Confirm the boiler type, existing controls, hot-water arrangement and any desire for room-by-room TRVs before comparing displays, apps or automation tricks.

If you want the closest thing to the W200's premium screen-led feel while staying in the UK heating lane, Nest is the cleaner comparison. Its circular display is smaller, but it offers proper Heat Link hardware, hot-water support and OpenTherm compatibility. If you want room-by-room radiator management plus Matter and Thread, tado° X is the more relevant direction. If you value UK boiler compatibility and a mature multi-room system at a lower entry point, Wiser makes a lot of practical sense.

The Scorecard: Brilliant Hub, Non-Starter UK Thermostat

Rating the W200 for a UK publication is awkward because the product itself is not bad. Quite the opposite: it is one of the more imaginative thermostat-hub combinations to arrive in 2026. But a review score should help you buy the right thing, not reward the most attractive concept in isolation. The W200's score is therefore dragged down by the fact that its core thermostat purpose does not transfer to the UK market.
