Sony Brings AI Upscaling to Standard PS5

Sony’s new QSSR technology has arrived in patches for Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, bringing a lighter version of PS5 Pro-style upscaling to standard consoles.

What you need to know

  • QSSR is Sony’s AI-guided upscaling system for the standard PS5.
  • Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first confirmed games to support it.
  • QSSR is not a replacement for the PS5 Pro’s full PSSR technology.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has brought AI-guided upscaling to the standard PlayStation 5 with Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR. The technology was announced on 1 October 2026 and is available through patches for Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.

QSSR arrived in PS5 patches for Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei on 1 October 2026.

QSSR is derived from PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), the AI-enhanced image technology introduced for PS5 Pro. Sony says PSSR’s computing requirements had previously made a comparable system impractical on the standard console.

A lighter version of PS5 Pro technology

Sony says QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned PS5 implementation to improve image detail and stability. The company has not published resolution targets, frame-rate figures, latency data or a direct comparison with PSSR for either launch game.

“While PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro, QSSR provides some notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on PS5.”

Insomniac Games’ Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald said QSSR adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” to Marvel’s Wolverine environments. Sucker Punch Productions Lead Rendering Engineer Jasmin Patry said the system excels at resolving fine details in Ghost of Yōtei’s characters and environments.

What it means for PS5 owners

There is no new QSSR-specific PS5 model: this is a software technology that developers can implement in individual games. Existing standard PS5 owners do not need to move to PS5 Pro to use it in supported titles, provided their games are updated.

That does not make the two consoles alike. The standard 1TB PS5 has a UK recommended price of £569.99, while the 2TB PS5 Pro costs £789.99. Sony continues to position the Pro as its higher-end console, with full PSSR as well as enhanced ray tracing and other hardware advantages.

What happens next

Sony says QSSR will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, following work under its Project Amethyst AI-graphics collaboration with AMD. However, the company has not confirmed further games, a rollout timetable, or whether older PS5 titles can be patched universally. For now, QSSR is a promising extra graphics option in two games rather than a blanket upgrade for the PS5 library.

Why it matters

Standard PS5 owners can now get some of the image-quality benefits associated with AI upscaling without buying Sony’s £789.99 PS5 Pro. But buyers should not assume the consoles are now equivalent: Sony says PSSR remains the “gold standard” on Pro, and QSSR support must be added by individual game developers. With no confirmed performance figures or wider game list, its value will depend on how broadly studios adopt it.
