Halo: Campaign Evolved Reviews Settle at 82 as PS5 Debut Lands
The Unreal Engine 5 remake is now available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, earning strong reviews despite performance concerns on some versions.
What you need to know
- Halo: Campaign Evolved launched on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on 28 July.
- Its current OpenCritic average is 82 from 91 reviews, with 90% of critics recommending it.
- Base PS5 and PC performance issues have tempered an otherwise positive reception.
Halo: Campaign Evolved, the ground-up remake of the 2001 original, is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. It launched simultaneously at 1:00pm BST on 28 July, marking the first time a mainline Halo game has arrived on a Sony console.

Critical reception is positive overall, though not quite at the level Halo has historically commanded. OpenCritic currently lists the game as “Strong”, with an average score of 82 from 91 critics and a 90% recommendation rate. That figure has settled down from an 83 average and 89% recommendation rate reported around launch.
Metacritic’s platform breakdown paints a more uneven picture. The Xbox Series X version sits at 85, PS5 is at 80 and PC is at 77, with each labelled “Generally Favorable”. The 83 OpenCritic average recorded across 76 critics at launch was also the lowest aggregate score in Halo’s 25-year history, with technical problems on PC a major factor in the softer result.
A polished remake, with technical caveats
Campaign Evolved is not a repeat of 2011’s Anniversary edition, which applied a graphical overlay to the existing game. This is a full remake built with a hybrid technology stack: Unreal Engine 5 handles its real-time rendering, while simulation code derived from Bungie’s original Blam engine remains underneath.
Halo Studios has retained the original-style physics, AI behaviour and ballistics to preserve the feel of Halo’s combat, while redesigning the levels and adding elements from later series entries. The package includes the original 10-mission campaign alongside a new three-mission prequel arc in which Sgt. Johnson and Master Chief take on a Covenant vessel.
There are new weapons, vehicles and enemy variants, including additions to the Flood faction. Halo Studios and Microsoft Gaming say the game has refined controls, console-only two-player split-screen, online co-op for up to four players, plus cross-play and cross-progression.
The campaign work has drawn substantial praise. A Gaming Network’s Marcel Dee awarded it 8/10, calling it “a strong modern remake of one of gaming’s most important campaigns.” AltChar’s Semir Omerovic also gave it 8/10 and said that “for newcomers, this is genuinely one of the best entry points the franchise has ever had.”
IGN highlighted solid, modernised gameplay, but felt the new missions did not last long enough. The more substantial criticism has centred on performance, particularly away from Xbox hardware.
Xbox leads, while standard PS5 has compromises
Xbox Series X|S is the version for which the game was primarily tuned. It uses hardware-accelerated Lumen ray tracing in performance mode and has been described as delivering a consistent frame rate.
PS5 Pro fares well too. Digital Foundry found that Sony’s PSSR2 upscaling technology reduces the temporal noise and flickering commonly associated with Unreal Engine 5 titles, producing what reviewers called the cleanest console image. Digital Foundry’s Oliver Mackenzie said the PS5 Pro performance mode was “impressively smooth” in demanding sequences, while cautioning that isolated drops can still occur.
The standard PS5 is less convincing. Quality mode is locked at 30fps, while performance mode targets 60fps but does not consistently maintain it. DualShockers scored the PS5 version 6.5/10, saying frame-rate problems affect at least half the missions on base hardware strongly enough to disrupt the experience.
Push Square’s positive PS5 Pro review also noted that the DualSense adaptive triggers and haptic feedback do not reach the standard of Sony’s own first-party games.
What UK buyers need to know
UK retail pricing starts from £39.99, according to Idealo price comparison data, although an official Microsoft UK recommended price was not confirmed in the available information. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers can access the game without an additional purchase. A £20 Premium Upgrade offers early-access benefits and digital extras to eligible Game Pass subscribers, provided they retain access through Game Pass or own the game after launch.
Physical Xbox and PlayStation editions do exist. Halo Studios senior community manager John Junyszek confirmed on Halo Waypoint that buying either console version at retail provides a physical case and disc. However, the disc does not remove the need for a download before the game can be played.
There is another catch for PS5 players: everyone must link a Microsoft account and Xbox Gamertag to their PlayStation Network profile before launching the game. That requirement applies across platforms, as does the need to be online for the initial download.
Campaign Evolved is also firmly a campaign-and-co-op release. It has no competitive multiplayer, ranked playlists or custom game infrastructure. For players expecting a full Halo multiplayer revival, that distinction matters as much as the review scores.
A significant PlayStation arrival
The PS5 release is the clearest sign yet of Microsoft’s expanded multiplatform strategy. Halo joins former Xbox console exclusives including Forza Horizon and Gears of War on rival hardware, following the departure of Xbox CEO Phil Spencer in February 2026.
For ordinary buyers, the decision is straightforward: this is a well-regarded new way to play Halo’s foundational story, especially for newcomers and co-op players. But PS5 owners weighing up the purchase should account for the base-console performance concerns, while anyone seeking competitive Halo should know that this remake is not designed to provide it.
Why it matters
This is the first mainline Halo release on PlayStation, giving PS5 owners access to Master Chief’s original campaign without buying an Xbox. UK buyers should be aware that the strongest technical experience appears to be on Xbox Series X|S and PS5 Pro, while the standard PS5 version can struggle to maintain its 60fps performance target. It is also a campaign-focused package, not a replacement for Halo’s traditional competitive multiplayer offering.
