Xbox announced on 9 September 2026 that it will publish PHYSINT, which remains in development at Kojima Productions.

The news was announced through Xbox Wire on 9 September, with Kojima Productions confirming the arrangement the following day. Kojima Productions remains the developer, and neither company has said that Xbox has acquired the studio or the PHYSINT intellectual property.

PlayStation has stepped away

PHYSINT was originally unveiled in January 2024 as a Kojima Productions project made in partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment. PlayStation confirmed on 10 September that it had withdrawn from the collaboration, but did not explain why.

“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on its project PHYSINT.”

According to Video Games Chronicle, Kojima said PlayStation Studios notified his studio in mid-June that it would cancel the project. He said Kojima Productions then spent three months looking for a new partner before reaching its agreement with Xbox.

Kojima has said development is continuing, describing PHYSINT as a title intended to redefine the action-espionage genre. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the company was “honored” that Kojima had chosen Xbox to work with Kojima Productions on the game.

What Xbox has not confirmed

There is still no release date, release window or confirmed platform list for PHYSINT. Xbox has not said whether it will be exclusive to Xbox platforms, arrive on Windows PC, be included with Game Pass, or release elsewhere.

No gameplay footage, story details, cast, pricing or technical information accompanied the publishing announcement.

The companies also said their relationship would extend into film and television, but announced no specific productions, platforms or dates. Xbox already has a separate Kojima Productions project, OD, in the works.

What it means for UK players

The immediate shift is from a Sony-backed collaboration to Xbox publishing. That is significant for the industry, but it is too early for buyers to make a hardware decision: an Xbox publishing deal alone does not establish where PHYSINT will be playable.

For now, the clearest news is that the project has survived PlayStation’s departure and remains in development at Kojima Productions.

Why it matters

PHYSINT’s publishing move means UK players should no longer assume it is a PlayStation-backed release. Xbox publishing does not, however, confirm that an Xbox console will be required: there is no word yet on platforms or exclusivity. For now, the practical change is the publisher attached to one of Kojima Productions’ highest-profile upcoming games.
