The Reno16 Pro arrived as a very deliberate attempt to squeeze flagship-adjacent features into a compact, more attainable Reno package. On first pass, it is difficult not to be impressed. A 6.32-inch body is genuinely manageable one-handed, yet Oppo fitted a silicon-carbon battery rated at 6,700mAh in the global version. That is a serious capacity for any phone, never mind one measuring 151.2 × 72.4 × 8.2mm.

There is one important correction to make immediately, though. The much-repeated 7,000mAh figure applied to the Chinese Reno16 Pro. Global Reno16 Pro models used a 6,700mAh Si-C battery, whilst European models used a 6,000mAh cell. That does not turn the handset into a battery disappointment — far from it — but it does mean the headline needs an asterisk the size of a small moon.

The other notable regional change concerned the processor. The Chinese Reno16 Pro used MediaTek's Dimensity 9500s; the global phone used the Dimensity 8550 Super. Those are not interchangeable names for the same thing. The latter is a capable upper-mid-range chip which makes everyday Android feel quick, but the former was the more flagship-leaning silicon. There is no need to overcomplicate the physical basics. The Reno16 Pro used a single USB-C port, supported 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, eSIM and an infrared port. The 512GB version made more sense for frequent travellers and anyone who intends to use the full-resolution shooting mode often.

A small but useful detail

The infrared port remains one of those features you forget about until a hotel television, fan or air-conditioning unit has misplaced its remote. It is not a reason to buy the Reno16 Pro on its own. It is absolutely the sort of practical extra that makes a phone feel better thought through six months later.

Oppo also included hybrid stereo speakers. "Hybrid" is doing some honest work here: the bottom speaker was louder and carried the fuller bass, whilst the upper channel was more about breadth and dialogue. The 6.32-inch AMOLED panel had a 1216 × 2640 resolution, a density of 460ppi, support for one billion colours and a maximum refresh rate of 144Hz. It was a sharp, dense screen that made small text, maps and image editing look suitably clean.

The 144Hz ceiling is nice, but it needs a dose of perspective. Much of the time, apps, video and the operating system do not need 144 frames per second. The practical benefit is smooth scrolling, responsive animation and a little extra fluidity in compatible games. The key thing is that the phone can scale its refresh behaviour according to content rather than running flat-out for no good reason. A fast screen should feel effortless, not like it is trying to win an argument.

Brightness was another strong point. Oppo listed 1,800 nits in high-brightness mode, with a 3,600-nit peak figure, and the typical figure was 600 nits. Those peak numbers are not the same thing as sustained full-screen brightness — no manufacturer's headline peak figure is — but the important real-world takeaway is simpler: this is a display built for outdoor use. White backgrounds remain readable in harsh daylight and HDR highlights have enough punch to look properly lively.

At the other extreme, the measured minimum brightness was 1.9 nits. That is excellent news for late-night reading in a genuinely dark bedroom. Combine that with 3840Hz PWM dimming, and the panel made a convincing case as a screen you can live with all day rather than merely admire in a shop.

Screen verdict

The Reno16 Pro did not rely on a huge diagonal to feel premium. Its panel is compact, high-density, very smooth and usefully bright. If you prefer a phone that disappears into your hand rather than one that dominates it, this is one of the more compelling display packages around.

This is where the global Reno16 Pro needs its second clear disclaimer. It used the Dimensity 8550 Super, not the Dimensity 9500s found in the Chinese phone. The 8550 Super paired one 3.25GHz Cortex-A725 core with three 3.0GHz Cortex-A725 cores and four 2.1GHz Cortex-A725 cores, alongside a Mali-G720 MC7 GPU.

That translated into everyday performance that should satisfy almost everybody. Social apps, navigation, camera processing, web browsing, messaging and ordinary multitasking are well within this platform's comfort zone. With 12GB of RAM, the Reno16 Pro had the breathing room to move between several active apps without immediately feeling cramped. ColorOS 16 also plays a role here; a responsive interface can make mid-to-upper hardware feel better than a spec sheet suggests.

It is not, however, a handset I would buy primarily for sustained heavy gaming. Stress testing was the warning sign. In a 20-minute test, performance fell as low as 51% of its peak once internal temperature reached roughly 40°C. GPU stress performance was unexpectedly poor compared with other phones using similar chipsets, and CPU stress results were slightly weaker than the Reno15 Pro.

That sounds damning written down, but context matters. A stress test exists to be cruel. It keeps pressure on the chip in a way a normal person rarely does outside of long gaming sessions, video rendering or other sustained workloads. The more useful conclusion is not "the phone is slow." It plainly is not. The conclusion is that its performance headroom is less dependable under prolonged graphics-heavy load than the rest of its specification suggests.

That final bar is deliberately labelled. The 2.76 million AnTuTu result belonged to the Chinese Reno16 Pro baseline, not the global Dimensity 8550 Super model. Oppo gave the Reno16 Pro an unusually confident camera arrangement. The main camera used a 200MP Sony IMX890 sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and two-axis optical image stabilisation. Used poorly, it is another button you press by accident and then resent for thirty seconds. That is the nature of dedicated assistant controls. The capability is useful; whether it becomes a habit depends on your workflow. I would not choose the Reno16 Pro because of the button, but I would not dismiss it as nonsense either. It is more practical than many AI features because it starts with something already on your screen rather than asking you to invent a reason for artificial intelligence to join the conversation.
